Hill to Run Throwback Toyota Scheme at Daytona

August 11, 2020

Since 1959, the Daytona International Speedway (DIS) has produced countless iconic moments in motorsports history, and on Sunday afternoon, Austin Hill and the HRE team will honor a part of the “World Center of Racing’s” road course and endurance racing history. This weekend’s inaugural contest on DIS’ road course layout is completely unexpected, but Hill and the No. 16 team are welcoming the challenge of one of the world’s most iconic circuits.

Hill’s No. 16 Fukushima Toyota / Tochigi Toyota, TRD Toyota Tundra will carry the colors of the All-American Racer’s MKIII that earned Toyota’s first victory in the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1993. NASCAR Cup Series winner, 24 Hours of Le Mans winner, and all-around legend Dan Gurney owned the team that was powered by a Turbocharged Toyota in-line 4 engine. PJ Jones, Rocky Moran, and Mark Dismore piloted the MKIII and Toyota power plant to victory by a whopping 10 laps after setting a qualifying track record that stood for 26 years until 2019.

The Toyota-powered Eagle MKIII cars from All-American Racers’ team compiled 21 victories in 27 races in the early 1990’s, including an IMSA record 14-consecutive wins. Hill will revive one of the most successful schemes in motorsports history and will look to add to its legacy with his first-career road course victory on Sunday afternoon.
